I help schools, agencies, and organizations build the curriculum, training, and environments where neurodivergent people get to stop apologizing for surviving bad design and start doing the brilliant thing they came here to do.
ON STAGE AT TEDxNASHVILLE
I'm Alora Young, a Nashville consultant, speaker, curriculum developer, and the founder of NeuroScouts, and all of my work keeps circling back to one stubborn idea, which is that when a person keeps struggling in an environment, you change the environment first.
Before any of that I was (and still am) a poet. I wrote Walking Gentry Home (Hogarth / Penguin Random House), served as Youth Poet Laureate of the Southern United States, a U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts, and a U.S. Arts Envoy, and then wrote a whole Swarthmore thesis, Every Lesson Is a Poem, about what spoken word can teach us about neurodivergent learners. Right now I'm getting my MFA at Vermont College of Fine Arts, because apparently I cannot stop going to school.
Everything I offer is built out of lived experience, a frankly unreasonable amount of research, and a curriculum designer's eye for what actually sticks.
I design neurodivergence-affirming curriculum and programs, run Habitat Hacking audits on your spaces and systems, and train your people so the work keeps growing after I leave.
Currently consulting with the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services.
